Indie Film Recommendations for our Festival

We’ve had a number of submission so far but not nearly enough for a whole film festival. With only two months until the film submission deadline, we decided to reach out to our community to see if you have any recommendations for some good quality independent films you have been lately. These can be ones you’ve seen in recent film festivals or screenings that you thought were exceptional. Please make your recommendations below in the comments section.

Also, if you know any great “film makers in the making” who might be interested in entering their work in the film contest, please pass on our information. They can submit their film via the submission section of our website. There is no cost to enter and we looking for films of all types. This means they will get their films judged, and maybe screened for free!

Kickstarter Fundraiser, Twitter Contest, and more

UPDATE: The kickstarter project has ended and we are happy to say we reached our goal of $2000! Well $2005 to be exact. Thank you so much to those that contributed to our campaign!

We started our Kickstarter project back on December 9th to help raise funds for our upcoming festival in 2011. We have 2 backers already at the time of this post (which we are grateful for) but we will need much more to complete our goal of $2000 by our deadline of January 18th, 2011.

What is Kickstarter, you ask?

Kickstarter “is a new way to fund creative ideas and ambitious endeavors” by leveraging the internet and the power of social media. You present Kickstarter with your idea, along with your monetary goal, and the number of days you want your project to run. If chosen, you then create donation levels and rewards for each. The catch to Kickstarter is, if you haven’t reached your amount goal by the deadline, all of the donations go back to the donors. This is called an “All or Nothing Funding.”

You can see more details about our project on our Kickstarter page. We started this project because we need to raise $2000  to help cover the cost of renting venues (such as the Art Museum of Southeast Texas) and equipment (for film projection and live music) that we can’t get donated to the event. This is also our first year, in our four year history being independent without the luxury of funds from grants and other sources from being a non-profit.

If you want to help in the fight to keep indie art alive in Southeast Texas then please pledge to help us reach our goal. And even if you can’t pledge, please help by spreading the word to your friends about our fundraiser.

One is a “Preview” event planned for January were we showcase one or two of our film submissions along with bands that will be playing at the festival. We are still looking for a good venue that has both a screen and stage for the music act.

48 Hour Film Contest – Another event is a 48 hour film contest, where teams are given 48 hours to shoot, edit and encode their film based on the criteria set in the contest. This event will be planned closer to the festival date in February.

Stay tuned for more details about these events as they because available. One final note, if you are interested in getting involved with the festival planning, be sure to visit our volunteer page for more information.

Lamar Video Race and Festival Preview

UPDATE: [02.08.2011] – We had to change the venue for the Video Race/Festival Preview. Instead of using the Dishman Art Museum, the event has been moved to the Communications Building at Lamar University. Here is a map to show you the route to get to the Communications Building from the Dishman Art Museum.

We should have volunteers to show you the way.
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University film program is set to host a 48-hour video race in conjunction with this year’s Boomtown Film and Music Festival. Open to the general public, teams will have two days to write, shoot and edit short films based upon specific props and genres assigned to them at the start of the race.

The contest will kick off after an hour-long BoomFest preview screening at 7 PM on Friday, Feb. 11 at the Dishman Art Museum. Both the festival preview event and the race itself are free to the public.

“We’re hoping to get racers this year from high school as well as college students and professionals.” said O’Brien Stanley, film professor at Lamar University.
